Circa 2.5 mio people visit Kerry annually. Most of those approach Kerry through this Gateway at Glounsharoon.
The first thing they see is this obstruction. First Impressions Matter!
First Impressions: 2.3 million visitors to Kerry annually. Most come through Kerry's Front Door and the Gateway to the Kingdom at Glounsharoon. The first glimpse of what Kerry has to offer: The state of disrepair at Glounsharoon and and the eye-sore Council Dump!
Most people Google their destination before the depart on their holidays. What you see if you Google and look around Glounsharoon is a National Embarrassment and an absolute shame.
What Kerry Has Done!

The absolutely fabulous Platform at the Basket. World Class. (Lovely picture by Dral Photography)
Below: What Kerry has done.
A Disjointed Tourism Policy & Approach and years of KCC Council neglect and inaction (No Investment, Not proper Maintenance...).
(A Materials Dump Located at Glounsharoon!) A horrendous, eyesore KCC Council Yard maintained by the Kerry County Council (KCC) is obstructing the panoramic views.
The Deception & The Hypocrisy - The KCC publicly advocate to support Kerry Tourism - but they defy logic by locating this horrid eye-sore of a Council Dump at the Glounsharoon Scenic Platform, at the Gateway to The Kingdom and where most of the 2.5 mio annual visitors to Kerry get their first glimpse of those world class Kerry majestic panoramic views.
KERRY & KERRY TOURISM Must DO BETTER!
A Council Materials Dump is situated right alongside the most beautiful Scenic Spot on the planet, with mounds and mounds of materials obscuring the best panoramic views in the Country. KCC continue to ignore and neglect Glounsharoon and fail to exploit the vast tourism potential there. No proper maintenance plan and absolutely no investment (No Long-Term-Plan for Glounsharoon) means that over 45 years have passed and Glounsharoon still has not reached its potential. There is vast tourism potential at Glounsharoon, but no proper vision or plans to make it the international landmark that it is capable of being.
The story of Glounsharoon is certainly not a morale booster for Kerry people and it is a pathetic example to our youth as regards how 'things' should be done in Kerry. It is a shame and a national embarrassment. We observe those who pontificate about excellence and the magnificent plans pencilled and broadcast on high, with the shambolic aspirational 'words' promising to achieve. But when it comes to delivery and 'action-required', the veil drops and words and promises evaporate into a cyclical black-hole of inaction and procrastination. Fabulous Glounsharoon Scenic Resource KSP deserves much, much more.
GLOUNSHAROON, Neglected for years, DUMP is an Abomination!
Eye-Sore, KCC Dump Visible from All Sides!
Glounsharoon Deserves Better Than This!
Ireland & Kerry Tourism Ignore The Plight & The Potential at The Glounsharoon Scenic Resource
FIRST IMPRESSIONS LINGER, FIRST IMPRESSIONS MATTER: Tourism agencies have disjointed Tourism Policies and seem oblivious, unaware and seem not to appreciate that most of the 2.3 MILLION annual visitors to Kerry come through Glounsharoon on the N21 primary route into Kerry, The Gateway to The Kingdom and Kerry's Front-Door. Glounsharoon is where Kerry Opens Both Arms Wide to Welcome Visitors and where most visitors to Kerry get their FIRST true experience of what Kerry Tourism has to offer.
If you visit the National & Kerry Tourism Websites, there is no mention of the Glounsharoon Scenic Resource and you read the following aspirational generalities regarding Kerry Tourism:
Kerry Tourism: ''Sculptured by the wonders of the ice-age and caressed by the waters of the Gulf Stream, Co. Kerry is a place steeped in ancient history and folklore. It boasts a treasure trove of pre-historic buildings and monuments, many of which are remarkably well preserved and cared for. The county claims some of Ireland's most dramatic scenery, including the world-renowned Lakes of Killarney and the awe-inspiring landscapes of the Beara and Dingle peninsulas. There is much to see and do here with angling, walking, deep sea diving, golf and leisurely sightseeing a must for the visitor.''
Discover Ireland: ''Experience Kerry and its gloriously moody landscapes, dramatic headlands and crashing waves. You’ll remember the roar of the ocean long after your visit. Discover charming towns and villages with brightly painted houses, traditional pubs and colourful shop fronts. Travel the curving country roads and narrow mountains paths of this stunning county. Book a break to Kerry, you’ll soon understand why it’s christened The Kingdom.''

The HYPOCRISY and utter Conflict in KCC Tourism Policy:
The Kerry County Council Tourism Webpage does not mention The Kerry Scenic Platform at Glounsharoon. Neither does this KCC Tourism webpage reveal what the KCC does at Glounsharoon. The KCC advocates for Kerry Tourism and at the same time, the KCC maintain a HORRENDOUS KCC Council Yard/Dump beside a Majestic Scenic Platform at Glounsharoon. - A HORRENDOUS KCC DUMP at the Gateway to the Kingdom of Kerry, Kerry's FRONT DOOR where each year, 2.5 mio visitors to Kerry, pass Glounsharoon on their journey into Kerry and where 2.5 mio visitors pass Glounsharoon again on their way home as they leave Kerry:
''The Tourism Unit was established in 2014 to promote further economic development in Kerry by facilitating the development and promotion of a sustainable and diversified tourism industry. This is being achieved through the establishment of effective partnerships and collaborations with Fáilte Ireland, Tourism Ireland, the local tourism trade, community groups and development companies and by developing new tourism initiatives, enhancing existing tourism infrastructure and ensuring an acceptable standard of environment for locals and visitors. The tourism sector is one of the major growth areas of the national and local economy and it is the sector of the economy with the most potential for growth. Kerry attracts 1.5 million tourists annually but has the potential to increase visitor numbers, visitor spend and the number of people employed in the tourism sector. The Tourism Unit together with the Destination Kerry Forum and other stakeholders, prepared a Kerry Tourism Strategy & Action Plan 2016-2022 to support the development of tourism in Kerry.'' And this extract is from the KCC Website. This is some Tourism Policy in effect!!!!
Fáilte Ireland: If you search under 'Glounsharoon' on the Failte Ireland website, Glounsharoon does not feature. Click HERE:
